Founding of an International Research Center in Mosul

(L to R): TARII Executive Director, Amanda Long, Governor of Nineveh, Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil, and Director of ISAC, Dr. Timothy Harrison, sign the landmark Memorandum of Understanding

On October 29, 2025, TARII signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nineveh Governorate and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC - University of Chicago) that will establish an international research center in Mosul — marking a decisive moment in Iraqi scholarship, cultural heritage, and global academic collaboration.

This agreement affirms TARII’s newly ratified mission: to advance knowledge and understanding through multidisciplinary research, collaboration, and education, addressing Iraq's unique cultural, historical, and scientific challenges and opportunities. It also signals a bold investment in Mosul’s future, as a beacon of learning and intellectual exchange in Iraq.

Key highlights:
• A full-scale research center in Mosul, under the MoU, will provide researchers with a physical hub for interdisciplinary work, heritage preservation, and academic partnerships. Housing at the center will provide space for visiting scholars from across Iraq and the world to stay, share, and expand their expertise.
• TARII brings together a consortium of universities, museums, and research institutions — leveraging global expertise for local impact.
• This is more than infrastructure: it’s a symbol of transformation, resilience, and renewal. For Iraq. For collaboration. For scholarship.

To everyone who has worked behind the scenes — TARII’s staff, the Nineveh Governorate, the Nineveh State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (SBAH), and ISAC — we extend deep thanks. Your tireless efforts, vision, and commitment have brought this moment into being.

As we move into the next phase — implementation, recruitment of fellows and scholars, and programming the research agenda — we invite colleagues, partners, and supporters to engage with us. Together we will elevate Iraqi scholarship, ensure heritage and social knowledge are globally connected, and build a lasting institution that will serve generations.
