TARII Heritage Grants

In partnership with the JM Kaplan Fund, this small grants program seeks to support Iraqi teams in their efforts to preserve cultural heritage in Iraq.

This new program will bring funding to Iraqi-led heritage preservation projects. These projects should focus on preserving either the tangible or intangible heritage of Iraq, with the proposed phase of the project to be completed within one year.

Potential projects may include, for example:

  • Safeguarding and restoring historical structures that are at risk

  • Researching, documenting, and preserving a collection, archive, or site

  • Converting restored structures with the objective of benefiting the community

  • Establishing an archive, museum, conservation lab, etc.

  • Educating and engaging the community

Budgets should be a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $15,000.

Eligibility and Considerations

The head of the project (or team lead) should be a resident of Iraq. International collaboration is encouraged, however, it should not take the substantial portion of the budget.

Professionals with prior training in the heritage field or with a demonstrated history of relevant work experience will be more likely to secure funding. A CV will be expected from every team member as part of the application.

The minimum education criteria for the program leads will be a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as archaeology, history, architecture, engineering, or art. However, exceptions may be granted if a candidate can demonstrate extensive field experience.

The applicants may choose to submit for a complete one-year project or a multi-phased initiative.

Applications that include university students are encouraged, providing them with the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience outside of their academic curriculum, further enhancing their CV and preparing them for a career. A diverse and interdisciplinary team is also encouraged.

Application Process

The application process will be comprised of two phases.

Interested applicants should submit an Expression of Interest, which will:

  • explain the project: describe the project, how it will contribute to the preservation of Iraq’s heritage, list the goals and expected outcomes, and outline the project schedule. This should be no more than 3 pages.

  • list an estimated budget: include the estimated costs for personnel, equipment and supplies, travel, and other costs. A further breakdown is not needed here but will be required if invited to submit an application.

  • briefly introduce the potential team members: include their name, position on the team, and a very brief background. If a specific person has not been selected yet then list the position and what they will contribute to the team.

  • be no more than 5 pages and submitted as a Word document or PDF.

TARII is not accepting any further Expression of Interest at this time.

TARII is reviewing the submissions and will invite a comprehensive application from projects that appear to be feasible, valuable, and within the mission of this initiative. The invitation will include the necessary application documents with instructions.
